“Airship.01”: Small forest, big impact

A small forest installation in the Museumsquartier shows how plants and fog make summer in the city bearable.

Vienna. The first reflex: take a deep breath. The air is not only cooler, but also noticeably better, here in the small pavilion in the main courtyard of the Museum Quarter (MQ). In short: Much more pleasant, especially when the concrete-laden main courtyard has heated up on hot days already in the morning.

“Come in, breathe in” is written on the gray curtains of this forest installation, which is called “Airship.01” and is now open to the public until September 15th (8am to 10pm). It is a small, round room, only a few square meters high and three meters high, a miniature forest in a tent in which grow holler, pine, beech, but also roses and lilac. By four to six degrees, the plants lower the temperature in combination with fans and spray mist. The spray mist technology comes from the Lower Austrian company Raintime, which also supplies catering and the Prater with such facilities.

On white round benches you can take a seat here in “Airship.01”. But you will probably not be able to stay for a long time (even if you would like to!), The next curious visitors will come in and gratefully take a deep breath. And that, it seems already on the first day, the pretty, small MQ forest already as a backdrop for selfies and group photos discovered. It is quite possible that it will stagnate here on hot days, sometimes because of the photo opportunities.

After all, “Airship.01”, which premiered at the 2015 Expo in Milan (“breathe.austria”), has turned out to be a little small, in order to actually serve as a cooling place for the masses. But as such, one should not completely understand him. With the installation – which was implemented together with the Austrian advertising, the federal forests contributed the plants, – wants to show the collective Breath.Earth, how to conserve resources and resources for cooling and good air in the city. If you want to wish something after the short visit: Please like more of it in the hot spots of the city, please also bigger. (Mpm)
