The hot summer months are in full swing, and as temperatures continue to rise in many cities, people are longing for places where they can escape the heat. In the midst of the Austrian capital Vienna, a new feel-good oasis was unveiled on July 18, 2023, which is not only creating a buzz with its fresh greenery, but also with a unique water feature.
The “500 square meter water feature” at Praterstern was implemented by the renowned company Raintime and impressively demonstrates how urban spaces can be creatively and sustainably designed and cooled in times of climate change.

Water feature at Praterstern

Raintime realizes special design with nozzle & light technology

An impressive water feature with an area of 500 square meters shines at the Praterstern and reminds in its star shape of the original appearance of this historic place in Vienna. The 500 square meter water feature was implemented by Raintime and inspires with its fascinating nozzle and light technology.

The water jets, sprinklers and nebulizers of the water feature work in perfect harmony and adjust according to the temperature and season to effectively cool the place. A special feature of this water feature is the ability to disable cooling as needed, making it extremely flexible. Combined with the generous green spaces and shady trees, the water feature creates a pleasant microclimate that visitors and passersby alike can enjoy.

Innovative sponge city principle for climate-friendly urban design

The sustainable solution of the sponge city principle plays a decisive role in the implementation of the project at Praterstern. Through this innovative concept, precipitation as well as fresh water from the water feature is directed into the sponge city, ensuring an efficient water supply for the trees.

The principle of the sponge city has proven to be extremely successful in combination with modern climate engineering. Not only does it provide an improved water supply for the plants, but it also contributes significantly to a comfortable and cooling climate. We have already impressively demonstrated the success of this approach in numerous projects, including the Singapore Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai.

Raintime mist cooling
Sustainable technology for pleasant refreshment

Raintime mist cooling relies on a climate-friendly and pioneering technology that creates a refreshing climate. The innovative “Dry Mist” process is based on the principle of evaporative cooling. In this process, water is finely atomized at high pressure through special high-pressure nozzles. The finer the mist, the stronger the cooling effect. The microscopic droplets that escape from the fog nozzles extract heat from the ambient air, thus creating a refreshing evaporative cooling effect.

Raintime high-pressure spray misting systems are characterized not only by their effective cooling performance, but also by their environmental friendliness and conservation of resources. Through the economical use of water and electricity, they contribute to sustainable use and fit perfectly into the concept of environmentally conscious urban design.
